Celebrate Summer the Lansing Way
By Naomi Burton, East Lansing
If you think you have to spend money to create great summer memories, think again Michiganians, because there is serious talent and impressive entertainment options right in your backyard.
For example, in Lansing this summer there are a variety of low-cost or free festivals, activities and events that suit any taste. Coming up Saturday, July 10 on Washington Square, the Taste of Downtown festival allows visitors to taste more than 100 wines from around the world, sample food from a variety of downtown businesses and enjoy entertainment provided by Third Coast Steel and Soulstice.
Another festival entering its 16th year is the Lansing Jazzfest. The Jazzfest is a FREE music festival held Aug. 6 and Aug. 7 in the streets of Old Town. The festival asks national, regional, and local acts to play an original composition, something that hasn't been played at any other festival, to provide a unique experience for the festival goers.
If you’re a car junkie then visit the 17th annual Car Capitol Celebration held Aug. 14 on Michigan Ave. The celebration is packed with river cruises, live bands, a beer tent and plenty of food to munch on as spectators enjoy Mid-Michigan's finest classic cars.
'Real Music. Real Fun.' is how the Lansing Live crew describes their FREE summer-long event that brings a star line-up of bands to Lansing. If you've been to downtown Lansing and haven't heard or seen the Lansing Live set up on Washington Square then you're missing out. The event takes place every Thursday at 3 p.m. and is open to anyone 21 and older and food is served by Tavern on the Square.
So enjoy the perks of Lansing and create some quality memories by visiting one or all of these great summer events. For more ideas on events and activities going on in Lansing visit lansing.org.
