Leap Into Placemaking - Twitter Event :: February 29, 2012 :: 1:00 PM

Campus Martius, DetroitJoin Let's Save Michigan next week for a live discussion--via Twitter--with four of the nation's leading experts on placemaking.

  • Nate Berg: A writer and journalist currently writing for The Atlantic Cities, a publication focused on the most pressing challenges facing cities and neighborhoods.
  • Dan Gilmartin: Executive Director and CEO of the Michigan Municipal League, host of WJR 760's The Prosperity Agenda, member of the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities, and mind behind The Economics of Place.
  • Diana Lind: Urban advocate, writer, and Editor in Chief at Next American City, a non-profit and publication devoted to socially and environmentally sustainable futures for America's cities.
  • Kathy Madden: Environmental designer and director of the Project for Public Space's Placemaking Education and Public Space Research and Publication programs.

Let's Save Michigan advocates for policies and practices that support, revitalize, and promote Michigan's cities.  For decades, disinvestment and our auto culture have contributed to hte decline of our great public spaces.  But thankfully, there is a new understanding among many leaders that we need to reinvest in our public spaces, and rebuild the public amenities that make people choose to live, work, and play in Michigan's cities of all sizes.

Fortunately, we're not starting from scratch.  Our cities and villages have good bones and unique architecture and assets.  We can draw from placemaking experiments around Michigan and the world to guide us as we rethink our own public spaces.

During our Twitter conversation next Wednesday, our experts will share some of their favorite examples of placemaking, focusing on how small, inexpensive, and creative investments in public spaces can have a big impact on the community.

To participate in the conversation, follow the hashtag #LSMplace on Twitter on February 29 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM EST.

You can also follow our Twitter feed (@LetsSaveMich), and be sure to follow our experts: @AtlanticCities (Nate), @DPGilmartin (Dan), @NextAmCity (Diana), and @PPS_Placemaking (Kathy).

Please tune in next Wednesday.  In the meantime, what questions do you have about placemaking?  Tweet with #LSMplace between now and the event, and we'll ask our panelists next week.
