Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood
U.S. Department of Transportation

I am writing to let you know enough is enough — it's time for Michigan to get its fair share of federal transportation funding.

Your recent decision to award Michigan a mere $40 million of the $8 billion appropriated to develop high-speed rail in the U.S. — less than 1 percent — is unacceptable.

At its best, this most recent decision to deprive Michigan of transportation funding is business as usual. At its worst, this is a disappointing signal from Washington, D.C. that our state must face on its own one of the greatest economic challenges any state has seen in a lifetime.

Each day we are developing a greater appreciation for mass transportation in Michigan. We are moving forward with transit and rail projects that would complement a high-speed rail line. And many of us agree with the Obama administration that these transportation projects represent more than just temporary construction jobs; they are a critical step to building a strong foundation that will spur future economic development for generations of Michiganders to come.

A lack of federal support will jeopardize this progress.

I appreciate that our state must make hard decisions and overcome significant challenges if we're going to succeed in bringing Michigan back. However, there are certain projects we simply cannot accomplish without Washington’s assistance.

Michigan has long been a leader in transportation, and with your help, we can lead this nation once again. That is why I’m asking you to give greater consideration to Michigan with the upcoming allocation of $2.5 billion in high-speed rail funds later this year.

Sincerely,
