Highland Park Farmers Market
About the Project
The site is the parking lot of the Highland Park School District Administration building. It is fenced in and has security cameras focused on the space. The lot is in good condition, is adjacent from retail stores, Highland Park High School and Henry Ford’s first assembly line plant; a historical landmark that provides a great backdrop for the Farmers Market
The project goal is to create an attractive space that demonstrates the cultural heritage of Highland Park, its residents and the importance of local, accessible food.
We are requesting $1,000 to facilitate the design and installation of site aesthetics, including; mobile tents, portable landscaping (potted trees, plants and gardens and historical signage explaining the legacy of Highland Park. Highland Park has seen significant population loss resulting in poor economic and social conditions leaving very few positive, healthy destinations for residents. The Farmers Market would provide that opportunity for residents to once again gather, talk and share in the beautiful history and exciting future that the city has coming. It also generates access to healthy food, as Highland Park has become a food desert, most residents shopping at convenience stores for everyday food. This project would ignite a community seeking to rebuild.
We are working directly with the Mayor, his administration as well as the HP School District, HP Business association, local non-profits and many of the churches and clergies throughout the city. Each is providing something different given their capacity and interest, but all want to see a Farmers Market happen, and in a way that represents the beauty that is Highland Park.
